There is no other country on Earth that is configured like ours. Every other nation is there because of race, religion, language, ethnicity or geography.

We are here only because we agreed to subscribe to the words on four pieces of paper--The U.S. Constitution.

Unlike every other country, which sees itself as an end unto itself, we see ourselves as evolving. we're not satisfied. We're not willing to rest on our laurels. We think we can get better. We think we've got someplace to go.

When a 71-year-old California man discovered he had prostate cancer he asked his Sausalito psychiatrist to recommend marijuana to ease the pain. But a few weeks after he bought 13 small pot plants from an Oakland medical marijuana club, sheriff's deputies broke down the door of his home, handcuffed him, seized the plants and charged him with cultivating pot for sale. The district attorney's office later dismissed the charges against the man and returned his growing equipment. The police, however, had failed to water the baby pot plants, which shriveled and died. So the man filed a claim with his insurance firm and was reimbursed $6,500 for the pot under the part of his homeowner's policy that covers "trees, shrubs and other plants."

Subject: Bad American Ted Nugent

I can agree with this in part.

Date: Fri, 29 Jun 2001 Written by Ted Nugent, the rock singer and hunter/naturalists, upon hearing that California Senators B. Boxer and D. Feinstein denounced him for being a “gun owner” and a “Rock Star”. This was his response after telling the senators about his past contributions to children’s charities and scholarship foundations which have totaled more than $13.7 million in the last 5 years!!

I’m a Bad American-this pretty much sums it up for me. I like big trucks, big boats, big houses, and naturally, pretty women. I believe the money I make belongs to me and my family, not some midlevel governmental functionary with a bad comb-over who wants to give it away to crack addicts squirting out babies.

I don’t care about appearing compassionate.

I think playing with toy guns doesn’t make you a killer. I believe ignoring your kids and giving them Prozac might. I think I’m doing better than the homeless.

I don’t think being a minority makes you noble or victimized. I have the right not to be tolerant of others because they are different, weird or make me mad. This is my life to live, and not necessarily up to others expectations.

I know what SEX is and there are not varying degrees of it.

I don’t celebrate Kwanzaa. But if you want to that’s fine; I just don’t feel like everyone else should have to.

I believe that if you are selling me a Dairy Queen shake, a pack of cigarettes, or hotel room you do it in English. As of matter of fact, if you are an American citizen you should speak English. My uncles and forefathers shouldn’t have had to die in vain so you can leave the countries you were born in to come disrespect ours, and make us bend to your will. Get over it!!!!!!!!!!!

I think the cops have every right to shoot your sorry butt if you’re running from them after they tell you to stop. If you can’t understand the word ‘freeze’ or ‘stop’ in English, see the previous line. I don’t use the excuse “it’s for the children” as a shield for unpopular opinions or actions.

I know how to count votes and I feel much safer letting a machine with no political affiliation do a recount when needed. I know what the definition of lying is, and it isn’t based on the word “is”-ever.

I don’t think just because you were not born in this country, you qualify for any special loan programs, gov’t sponsored bank loans, etc., so you can open a hotel, 7-Eleven, trinket shop, or any thing else, while the indigenous peoples can’t get past a high school education because they can’t afford it. I didn’t take the initiative in inventing the Internet. I thought the Taco Bell dog was funny.

I want them to bring back safe and sane fireworks.

I believe no one ever died because of something Ozzy Osbourne, Ice-T or Marilyn Manson sang, but that doesn’t mean I want to listen to that crap from someone else’s car when I’m stopped at a red light. But I >respect your right to.

I think that being a student doesn’t give you any more enlightenment than working at Blockbuster or Jack In The Box.

I don’t want to eat or drink anything with the words light, lite or fat-free on the package.

Our soldiers did not go to some foreign country and risk their lives in vain and defend our Constitution so that decades later you can tell me it’s a living document ever changing and is open to interpretation. The guys who wrote it were light years ahead of anyone today, and they meant what they said - now leave the document alone, or there’s going to be trouble.

I don’t hate the rich. I help the poor. I know wrestling is fake. I’ve never owned, or was a slave, and a large percentage of our forefathers weren’t wealthy enough to own one either. Please stop blaming me because some prior white people were idiots - and remember, tons of white, Indian, Chinese, and other races have been enslaved too - it was wrong for every one of them. Get over it.

I believe a self-righteous liberal Democrat with a cause is more dangerous than a Hell’s Angel with an attitude.

I want to know exactly which church is it where the “Reverend” Jessie Jackson preaches; and, what exactly is his job function. I own a gun, you can own a gun, and any red blooded American should be allowed to own a gun, but if you use it in a crime, then you will serve the time.

I think Bill Gates has every right to keep every penny he made and continue to make more. If it makes you mad, then invent the next operating system that’s better and put your name on the building. Ask your buddy that invented the Internet to help you.

I don’t believe in hate crime legislation. Even suggesting it makes me mad. You’re telling me that someone who is a minority, gay, disabled, another nationality, or otherwise different from the mainstream of this country has more value as a human being that I do as a white male. If someone kills anyone, I’d say that it’s a hate crime. We don’t need more laws! Let’s enforce the ones we already have.

I think turkey bacon, turkey beef, turkey fake anything sucks. I believe that it doesn’t take a village to raise a child - it takes a parent with the guts to stand up to the kid and spank his butt and say “NO!” when it’s necessary to do so. I’ll admit that the only movie that ever made me cry was Ole Yeller.

I didn’t realize Dr. Seuss was a genius until I had a kid.

I will not be frowned upon or be looked down upon or be made to keep silent because I have these beliefs and opinions. I thought this country allowed me that right. I will not conform or compromise just to keep from hurting somebody’s feelings. I’m neither angry nor disenfranchised, no matter how desperately the mainstream media would like the world to believe otherwise.

Yes, I guess by some people’s definition, I may be a bad American.

But that’s tough.

Ted Nugent

Some of you may know that my sis-in-law had a liver transplant several years ago.  You may also know that on Mothers' Day, she received a new liver and kidney.  She has been very sick these past 2 months, with one infection after another.

Yesterday, she finally lost her fight, leaving my brother, 2 daughters, and 10 grand kids.  Well, I wanted to share what happened last night after she passed away.  My brother was distraught and driving the 2 1/2 hours from the transplant hospital in Birmingham to their home in Mississippi.  20 minutes away from the house, he was stopped for driving erratically.  He tried to tell the officers Peggy had just died, they'd been married for 30 years, transplant, etc.  Well, they gave him a DUI test, which he passed since he was not drunk.  They asked why his eyes were so red and he said he had been crying because his wife just died.  They had him blow into the breathalyzer.  He blew a ZERO since he was not drunk.  They then searched his car and found his prescription for Zanax.  He has been taking these for stress since his wife has been almost dying for several months.  The Zanax was his prescription but it was not in the prescription bottle.  He tried to give them the # to the Dr. to verify that he had the Zanax legally.  He also had over a thousand dollars that our family had been giving him to pay for the $16 room at the hospital, his food each day, and his rent and bills since he has not been working.  This $$$ was going to be used to help pay for the funeral.  The police now have the $$$.  My brother then spent last night in jail on a cell floor on a DUI charge.  This was all happening about 5 hours after Peggy passed away.  He posted $550 in bail and another $65 to get the truck out of impound.  The second he got out, they arrested him again on federal drug charges for the Zanax, his Zanax.  He posted that bail and came home.  He is now asleep and my whole family is a little upset at the state of Alabama.

I am kind of writing this to vent and kind of to tell you that there are some AWFUL people on this world.  My brother found out that most lawyers want $7000 to take the DUI case.  He was not even drunk, for crying out loud.  While the charges will hopefully be dropped.... what the HELL is wrong with these 2 police officers?  Why didn't they escort Wayne the rest of the way home or get him a hotel?  Humanity is at an all time low in Alabama, apparently.

Thanks for letting me vent.  You all know I am usually very bubbly and happy.  Today is not one of those days.

Christine

About the July 17 post to this page, what a horror story. It is, unfortunately, the lot of humanity that there are ASSHOLES in every walk of life. It is even more unfortunate when one of them reaches out and touches someone you know. What might be in order is a full-page ad published in the hometown newspaper of those cops, naming names and telling the story. It would probably create a shit-storm. Just a suggestion.

Bluntly said "MELVINDALE SUCKS"!! I was born in Melvindale in 1975. My Dad lived there until I bought his house in 1996. I went to Dasher (now gone) and to Strong Junior High. I had my hair cut for years from Ex-Mayor Coogan and went to United Methodist Church with current Mayor Kinard. I have also done some Electrical work for him at his Cutter Grinder Shop. My brother (who Ex-Mayor Coogan once did Marriage services for) was on the City Council for 2 years and my other brother has helped with Melvindale Days and other activities in past years. You would think life would be good here for me.....WRONG. When I bought my house, Erik Witte, the paid off crooked inspector who helps to keep Melvindale considerably shitty, gave me a ticket for moving in without a permit to do so! Keep in mind that this was the house I have always had a bedroom in since I was born. Plus my taxes are outrageous. I have an 850 square foot home with an average Melvindale size yard and my taxes exceed $1700 a year. And what do I get for this? An Arabic neighbor who refuses to cut his grass along my fence EVERY YEAR FOR 7 YEARS! Every year I complain and every year the city cuts it, but only after I complain for 6 straight weeks. As I type, the grass stands 1 foot over my fence and goes about 4 feet out from it and I have been to the City Hall Clerk and Police Department 4 times in 3 weeks to complain and all they say is "DPW is going to cut it as soon as they get time". Get Time!?! How damn busy can they be in a city thats only 2 square miles!!! And then we have good ol' Darling Chemical. WOW, what a great smell I get from Horse Fat being cooked on a hot July day every year, repeatedly, as far back as I can remember. And I cant forget to mention the Industrial Fallout Dust I get on my brand new car, just eating at my paint. There was supposed to be a lawsuit against the responsible company that I signed papers for years ago. But when I ask whatever happened to the suit, nobody in City Hall can tell me. I'm sure my family will love me telling them that my pets died from eating grass with this God-Knows-What on it. I could go on and on, but will spare you the disgust. Thanks for everything Melvindale! I'm know I'll never forget ya!!! And for these people who love the city.....GET OUT MORE!!!!

I have read some of these bulletins on this message board and I have to say that the city has made some positive changes since I moved back here in 97'. I grew up here, went to school here and graduated MHS in 79'. I know and understand what kind of reputation this city has, some bad...some good. There is good and bad in every city you live in. It really depends on the people who live here and our city leaders. We can complain all we want to, it begins and ends with the citizens of Melvindale. I will say however, that our police dept needs to patrol more in our neighborhoods. The only time that I see a patrol car is when the police are called. Gale Garden apartments are located right behind where I am living. Police officers of Melvindale; you need to patrol there more often. In our recent "blackout" there were fights in the parking lot of the apartments, partying till all hours of the night with no regard or respect for their neighbors. I just feel if the people who live in the city and pay taxes to keep the city going, some of that money should be spent for more police protection and patrolling our city and residential streets. We can "finger point" all we want to & say that it's not our job or responsibility to get involved....I beg to differ with that. Major changes to this cities welfare cannot be done overnight, it takes time, careful planning, money, and involved and caring citizens. I would like to say to those that read this bulletin that think Melvindale is a dump; you need to either get involved or move out....That's the bottom line. Pack your bags, sell what you can and get out of Dodge...Live somewhere else! If those that read this think Melvindale is a bad place to live; may I remind all who read this that there is Southwest Detroit, which we border, or the seadier side of Lincoln Park which borders Ecorse. Live there, and then tell me how bad Melvindale really is. Till you have lived here, moved away and then come back into this city to live....you have really no right to bad-mouth this city. Our leaders are trying, we as citizens need to practice patience.

Suggestion for a website dedicated to Melvindale; I would like to see a section of this site devoted to the political machine in Melvindale. We have an election coming up and this site would be great place for all election hopefuls to state what they stand for. Or even better yet, lets have an online bulletin board dedicated to each elected person and candidate. Each candidate or official could then post their platform and answer questions posed by any Melvindale resident. This would be a great place to go for information on the intent of both hopefuls and officials, as questions are asked, the BB would preserve a history of conversations and topics that are important to the people who live here. Over the years I have seen some great things happen in Melvindale, I think the re-birth started with tearing down the old 'Mel' theater. I have also noted some alarming transformations. When I first moved to Melvindale, there were a handful of police vehicles at MPD, now our city has an absolute glut of police vehicles, we have cops on bikes, cops on motorcycles truck cops, cops in SUVs, even a weed cop. I have no ides who's influence caused this insane proliferation but I would like to remind all that we are paying for this. The city of Melvindale has not gotten any bigger in the past 13 years, and crimes has not gotten any worse, so how do we justify this expense? Where is the justification? What are the reasons? The operations here are just too big and expensive for a city not even 3 square miles small. In addition to this Melvindale has gotten into area where they should not go, like the ice arenas. I have nothing against having the recreational facility, except for the fact that this should have been a private venture from the beginning… remember who is paying the tab. This said I would like to vote for city officials who are dedicated to reducing our taxes here in Melvindale. Our taxes are actually one of the highest in the state (if not the nation) and it's about time we found people who will recognize this fact as a challenge, one that must be addressed and corrected. It's time to roll back our tax burden and reduce the size of government. As proven time and time again increasing the size of government (either local, state or federal) translates to just another opportunity for corruption. Lets go back to the real meaning of government, to be the servant to the people, not a money-demanding machine that is out of touch with the will of the people.

Damn it people, I am sooo sick of hearing your complaints! I am going to be your new voice of reason. If you don't like Melvindale or even if you do like Melvindale, Why don't you try voicing your opinion instead of just typing it on here where you're too ashamed to write your own damn name!? Nothing is forever, I know that MHS is bad; I go there (half the time anyway!) and nothing has changed. I've had my share of hard times at that school and I got locked up for a year because I refused to go to that school. If you think MHS is bad; Remember that their are people who are worse off. If you feel that your peers are talking behind your back.. forget it; you're never gonna see them after High school anyways! Who are they to judge you?! They have problems too ya know; They're not fuckin' perfect! And if your friends are talking about you.. maybe you should find some real friends. Sure Melvindale is the little city with the big mouth.. But you have to remember something, everywhere is like that! Plus there is only one High school in Melvindale, and not to dis' my generation.. but teenagers live for gossip!!! You can't honestly say that you've never talked shit about anyone. Then you'd be lying. My advice.. just stop complaining, these years should be the best years of your life.=)

As election day nears I believe the differences between myself and my opponents are clear. I believe our government must lead by example by cutting our own pay, they don't. I believe there is a way to fund the Pension One Plan, they don't. I believe we must govern with common sense and fiscal restraint, they don't, as they have demonstrated with their support of using our tax dollars to build a walkway along The Rouge River. The bottom line here is this: who has a CLEAR VISION for Melvindale? Not my opponents. They have dreams of walkways and selling ice time at the arena to non-residents. They talk of funding the city with enterprise funds, but offer no plans of how to do this. What enterprise are we going to get into? I have a CLEAR VISION for Melvindale and I will fight for we the people and ensure this government works to help the citizens and businesses of our community. Jason, I appreciate candidates like yourself posting their views on this site--I like to be an informed voter. But, shouldn't you put your best foot forward when presenting to the public? I know bulletin boards are historically informal but your misspellings are shameful for a highly visible political candidate. My advice--take your time, share your position on the issues openly and remember--first impressions still count!

There have been some recent bulletins posted on this website that are absolutely ridiculous. This website should not be used as a sort of "chat-room" so to speak, but should be used for the sole purpose of the Melvindale Community at large. I have noticed on one of the bulletins from Suzie...using the "F" word???? My question is why aren't these bulletins being screened first before they are actually put out onto the website. Is there no one monitoring these bulletins? It seems like their is NOT!!! That's ashame. I see here that on the website page where you type your message that there is a statement saying that NO profanity should be used or your message will be deleted...well someone missed the mark on that one, didn't they???? All that I'm asking is that we as citizens of Melvindale respect what has been given to us. Not take advantage of it or misuse this in any way shape or form.

I was rear ended by a Melvindale resident on Oct 30,2003 at around 10:30 P.M. while sitting at a stop light. The driver, a White male in his late 20's got out of his vehicle, rubbed my cars bumper, got back in his car and sped off. He reeked of alcohol. The car was a Green 1996-7 Plymouth Neon, plate number XHQ-893. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I'm very pleased to see that the people of Melvindale have elected a new Mayor for the City of Melvindale. It's time for a change, things cannot stay the same as they always have been. I am hoping that Mayor Luzod will enforce stricter laws for rentals, we have too many homes here in Melvindale that are rental homes and the landlords that rent these homes out do not care. The property value goes down and it makes the neighborhoods look really shabby. I believe that the city council really needs to take in to account for those who want to start a new business here in this city. Find out what from these individuals how their business will attract people into this city and what kind of growth this business will stimulate for the City of Melvindale. I see little businesses in the city that don't really do good for the city. For the longest time, this city has had no VISION....Things have always stayed the same, we elected the same people into office, because of the last name...are you getting what I'm saying? Out with the old and in with the new. We need new blood and this city needs to have a leader with vision, otherwise we go back instead of moving forward. That is why I voted for Mayor Luzod and I'm really glad I did. Those that read this might beg to differ....that's fine.

I grew up in Kentucky, Southwest Detroit and then Melvindale. Never in my life have I seen a city with so much political unrest. Does everyone really believe that politics have such a profound effect on everyday life? People need to take responsibility for their own actions and quit blaming their problems on corporations and politics. Smellvindale doesn't smell because of Marathon or the rendering plant. It doesn't have bad government or police. You the citizens create these problems in your hatred and disgust of your own lives. Who do we blame for our own shortcomings and faults except politics and big companies that support our community? If we all worked and became vocal about our concerns, then we would not have a problem because we would be the solution.

Only time will tell if our new Mayor/management team ends up being honest, intelligent and realistic. As taxpayers we entrust our city to people who (we hope) are able to see clearly both the possibilities for our city, but more importantly the realistic boundaries that must be recognized and dealt with. In the light of fiscal problems not just in Melvindale, state and federal governments are all over budget. Clearly it is more important to recognize the boundaries at this time. As if our tax burden and city charges are not already ridiculously high, these costs will only get worse if we have leaders who refuse to see this. Don’t get me wrong, of course I want the best for our city and want Melvindale to move forward where possible. But we need leaders who know that we cannot 'paint' Melvindale to look like Royal Oak, and then, wha-la Melvindale is Royal Oak. Lets not put hand crafted brick-work along side our mainstreets together with 1930's re-pop street lamps and expect Melvindale to be something it is not. Let's not build a riverwalk where you can watch the condoms and tampons flow by (yes, this really does happen in the Rouge river) while you gag on the smell. There are investments that make sense and there are some that do not. Executing a 'vision' at the taxpayers expense is wrong. A real noble vision would be to cut back on areas where we can, revamp the city's spending/investment practices and lower the taxes in Melvindale. This is why these issues are brought up, to focus the responsibility for the looting that occurs at the hands of our esteemed leaders, our taxes and services did not get this expensive by themselves, some trusted individual(s) put their hand to it. Weather the offense is being billed twice for our recycling, or wielding the power of City Hall unfairly against an individual, or an unsubstantiated increase for a service, or perpetrating a misguided 'vision', ill conceived based on something other than the economics of this tiny city. You can beat yourself up all day long, go to a shrink, practice Yoga or whatever, but you are still going to be ripped off when you get your bill. The economics in a city this size are just not going to be as flexible as some wish it would be. Unfortunately change can only happen if more get involved and hold the people in charge as responsible. It appears that most Americans are becoming de-sensitized to our American political circus. Whether it's Bill licking Monica's cigar, or the Detroit chief of police getting busted for an illegal handgun, there is a growing trend of acceptance. We all kind of just want to sit back and see what happens next, like it's a big soap opera, and we kind of expect something stupid to happen. Regardless of the political mess we have to deal with, wrong is still wrong, steeling is still steeling and it is not acceptable. And YOU are paying for it. The first step towards activism starts with a question or a letter, stay involved and ask the tough questions, you will make a difference.

Apparently Seth, you did not attend the debate at MHS, this is where I got this, Luzod said this himself!?!??! when he was explaining his background. So you tell me, I do not remember the exact words of what he said, but the drift was that he was a Melvindale cop. Maybe being that close to the Luzods' you can get a transcript or recording of that presentation? I would not know where to start to find that, but I think it was taped... I will try to find this info for you, and will let you know if I can find it, please do the same if you can find a transcript, and let me know. My intention is not to present things that I know nothing about, but this is what I heard, maybe you should ask him again about that debate and what he said, I would be curious to know myself. If I am wrong, I will post a correction, but please ask about this because I am sure this is what I heard. Seth wrote: "You think you know Melvindale?", Sorry you got the wrong impression, I do not claim to be an expert on anything, including Melvindale. I am only a taxpayer who I feels ripped off by all levels of government and I think that it is time for a change (if you don't think so, apparently you have not paid a water bill in the city of Melvindale). I hope you and the Luzod family watched the program on channel 4 (Flashpoint) last Tuesday, Ganholm was on and they talked about the critical condition the State budget is in, wherein they commented that the general fund will be reduced, this will affect Melvindale's budget, we are not in prosperous times, we are in time where we need people who are willing to cut back, better times will come at a later date for expanding the parks and such, I just don't think we should be focusing on spending and expanding, we should be focusing on saving and conserving. Do you know of any plans that Luzod has for saving the taxpayer money? If any reader knows how to locate a transcript of the MHS debate (wasn't really a debate, more like a presentation), please email me Paul S Woolum

There are many more laws and rules in the works that will raise our cost of living, Granholm is a good example of what happens when an elected official has a vision, the taxpayer often ends up getting beat. California recalled their Governor, maybe Michigan needs to do the same: New Fees Target Michigan Drivers: On October 1, 2003 new fees, fines and surcharges aimed at generating more revenue, at the expense of Michigan motorists, goes into effect. Most drivers don't realize the full extent of the penalties coming their way. * Public Act 165 has instituted new "Driver Responsibility Fees" which amounts to raised fines and surcharges on traffic tickets. * If you have seven points on your drivers license, you will be paying $100 each year for two years.. And, you will be paying an additional $50 per point for every point above seven. * If you're stopped and you can't present proof of insurance, you must pay a $300 fine, even if you later prove you do have insurance. * If you are caught DWLS-Driving While License Suspended it's a $500 fine, that also started on October 1, 2003. * If you receive an Operating Under the Influence of Liquor (OUIL), not only do you have to pay your fine, a new $40 surtax, and license reinstatement fee, but you will also be getting a $1,000 bill each year for the next two years (courtesy of Governor Granholm and Senator Gilbert). This additional money will go to local governments and police, county sheriffs, the State Police, the state General Fund and local fire departments. This sets a dangerous precedent, as the agencies that issue tickets will directly profit from them. "Guaranteeing police a share of motorist fines will lead to further fine increases down the road," says Eric Skrum of the National Motorists Association. "It creates a vested interest effect: more police revenue equals more patrols, which equals more tickets, which equals more revenue. The state legislature and city governments are sure to put pressure of police agencies to issue more tickets." There will be serious unintended consequences. More tickets will make more motorists subject to the points tax. As more drivers face annual fees of several hundred dollars to keep their licenses, the poorest will respond by not paying the fees. "The legislature rammed this through without investigating the impacts," says Skrum. The points tax was borrowed from New Jersey, but NMA reports that "In New Jersey, they call this program 'Debtor's Prison.' Poor drivers try driving without a license, incur an even larger surcharge when they get caught, and go so far in debt to the state they can never get a driver's license again. This prevents them from holding a job, and effectively takes them out of the economy." An increase in unlicensed, unregistered, and uninsured drivers is the probable outcome. The state cynically estimates that only a little over half of the points taxes will ever be paid; the rest will be owed by persons unable to pay and who will never be able to renew their licenses. I grew up in Melvindale and moved away in 1993. The little city with a big heart is a town caught in between worlds. One boarder sits on the edge of Detroit and Ecorse where crime is quite high. On the other side is Lincoln Park, Southgate and Taylor. These cities are viewed with higher regard. The land value, schools and residents are in a much higher category. This leaves Melvindale a head above poverty and can not complete with the better schools of Southgate/Lincoln Park. The residents of Melvindale are resentful and would really like improvement. Many can't see past the improvements in the last 10 years such as the high school stadium, the elderly home and the demolition of the X rated theatre (Hooray). Only recently Rite Aid was built. Government/police have done a good job preventing crime especially seeing it is boarded on Detroit and due credit should be given. Although, the corner of Outer Drive and Dix has always been a problem for crime and should be monitored more closely by officers. Also the area by Shoppers World, Eddies book store and the Melvindale Bar could use more monitoring. As with any city these are targeted areas for crime. I worked for Melvindale police for a time, therefore may have a small evaluated opinion on saying, officers have always felt they are the "creme dela creme" of Melvindale. They feel beneath going to these areas due to risk of their own precious lifestyles. I can say this because I knew most of the ones that are still active on the force. I even brought this up the Cheif Broady years ago, to no avail. As for the high school, I have a recent authority because my younger brother just graduated last year and myself a few years back. Some teachers work at MHS "not because of the money" but because they love to teach. These are the teachers that each decent student hopes to get when schedules are released. Then there are the teachers that collect their standard pay check and do not care at all about the job they are doing. I had teachers that would tell the students if they were quite they would get an A. Unexceptable! This is where "you need to spend money to gain money." The Board of Education needs to look at education as "educating the next generation". If the students are educated enough to obtain high paying positions and love their hometown they will buy a house in that town when they grow up. Oh yes, commercially Farmer Jack should be forced to clean up or renovate. Many residents shop elsewhere (The new Krogers) on Dix & Southfield because it is cleaner and friendlier. Arby's should be converted to a Taco Bell. Everyone has been saying this for years. The later part of Allen Road near the Ice Arena should be considered for additional recreation for the kids either city sponsored or commercially driven. This area is almost forgotten about. Rally's and Rite Aid was a great addition. Keep up the good work! Just a few tid-bits from someone that moved away because I didn't want my children to have the same educational choices I had. Website suggestion - gather and put old photos of the City on the Website. Although, a photo of the old X rated theatre is probably not a good idea. :)

Just to respond to Mitch's e-mail. Yes, we do have too many folks that complain about this city; I have my complaints as well. But, I'd rather concentrate my efforts on positive rather than negative. I went to school here from elementary up to high school. I remember back in the day, things were a lot more less complicated then they are now. High school was a blast!!!!! But, we grow up, move away, have families etc. and we go on. I set here and read these bulletins posted on this website and some of them are just cycle-babble. They gripe, they whine, they fume over the way this city handles business, but don't get off they're lazy behinds and go the the city council meetings and voice their opinion and if they do; they expect the city to jump and right away.....Folks, things take time, you have to be patient. It's the people that make this city what it is. When was the last time you took a cold, hard look at you're neighborhood? Look at the house you live in? Do you own or rent? If you are a homeowner in this city; you have every right to take your concerns to the city council and voice you're concerns. If you rent; and your landlord is a bum and doesn't fix what needs to be fixed or mow the lawn or make any modifications to the exterior of the home and it looks like" shanty town", you have a choice to either live there, or to report the landlord.....or better yet....move out if it's fesable for you to do so. We all have choices, so if you live here and like it, please say you do, but if you're not happy with your surroundings and where you live, then please by all means move and go elsewhere.....Those are the choices. You're response whether they are positive or negative are welcome.

this is in response to Cheryl Gorospe's posting...i have gone to the council meetings several times and while yes they may listen at the time to what you have to say it is already going in one ear and out the other. There is no way to make the city better while the same people are running it. we need new people in office then we'll see how well it can function. The biggest complaint i have is that people go 65 down outer drive when it's a 35 zone and i have yet to see the police pulling them over instead i have seen them countless times sitting in the squad cars on the side of vineyard liquor store, doing nothing but sitting there, to be honest i think they are sleeping. We need to see some changes and the first ones need to be new people in office.

Just a quick response to someone who had posted a bulletin back on February 9, 2004 about the "State of Melvindale"?????? I agree that the speed limit on Outer Drive is 35 MPH and folks do go WAY over that speed limit. I agree that I do see the police parked at the Vineyard Party Store located on Outer Drive...now whether or not they sitting there chit-chatting, who's to say. Anytime that I've passed by there, they are checking people for speeding. We have just elected a new mayor back in November 2003....along with city council members. Things take time, if you are looking for instant gradification on issues that are concerning you and you want it done NOW!!!! You have other people sir or madam that are way ahead of you. I will say the only time that I see the police in my neighborhood is when they are called, I'm not happy about that, I think they should be patroling more on our streets. I have to assume by your bulletin that you have already made your request know in the city council meetings. My question that I would like to pose to you at this time is what kind of mayor and city council members would you like to see be in office????? Did you vote in mayoral election this past November????? Or are you just blowing smoke......???????

I am a grad of the 1951 June class of Melvindale High School when it was in Allen Park. I know that that "Melvin" was the founder of Melvindale, I am wanting to know if any one knows where the "dale" in Melvindale got its name. Please reply to me if you know. Thank You

My memories of the Mel Theatre are somewhat mixed. When I was little - it was the first show I ever went to (had prizes for the kids between features on stage). I saw my first color movie there (by DeLux - something about the Civil War and 2 brothers on opposite sides). When I graduated in 1961 -MHS held their graduation ceremonies in the Mel Theatre (so I guess I graduated from the Mel Theatre). I remember that it was located next to a pretty good pizza shop (don't recall the name), and across Allen Road from Eason's Department store (never really saw anyone in that store - always thought it was a front for something else). Later in life - when I took my kids to show them where I graduated from (you know, the Mel Theatre) there it was - an X rated Movie house. Now it's gone - "thank goodness." This has been another "Melvindale Moment."

Ahhh....another Melvindale Moment has been rolling around in this old noggin. This one concerns "The Melvindale Recreation Center." Now, I'm sure, many of you are thinking of the ice arena, or the pool. Some of you may even recall the bowling alley on Oakwood (where part of the sport included lofting the ball at your buddy setting pins). But "No!" I'm referring to the pool hall on Oakwood across from the A&W (it was by Gallison's Gas Station - where gas was 18 cents when every where else it was a quarter - and you could crank out oil for 10 cents a quart that was actually used from oil changes in Dearborn). There were 2 pool halls in Melvindale the other was the old bank on the corner of Allen & Oakwood. We liked the "Melvindale Recreation Center" because we could tell our folks where we were...  And they thought it was ok. In reality, it was pretty seedy. We only went there at night and the only light was over the pool tables. Some old guy we called Snowball used to rack for tips. Of course, it's gone and I guess I can once again say "thank goodness." This has been yet another "Melvindale Moment."

I would like to make a couple of observations. First, most of the people who have complained about the schools in Melvindale write like they should have spent a lot more there. Donald, who told us Melvindale was named for Melvin (nice observation). Dale is often added to the end of communities (like Ferndale). Actually it infers "a valley" - but that doesn't seem to have any bearing for Melvindale or Ferndale. Maybe Melvin and Fern were the Dale's given names. Then there was Melvin Dale Collins - but he was much younger than the founder.

I just want to say that Melvindale is coming along nicely for the problems we have had in the past. Most people think Melvindale is this little dump in the middle of nowhere, but how wrong they are. We have many great attributes that other cities only wish they could have. For starters, the price for a house in Melvindale is affordable, and great for first time home buyers. The taxes are much better than you would get in our surrounding cities. We also have many different activities for our youth, elderly and everyone in between. This is the ideal place to live, whether or not you are rich, or poor. You can go the the 7-Eleven, or the new BP on Allen road, and run into just about anyone. Everyone knows everyone, its a small world, and an even smaller city. Who needs a reunion, when you could just visit the new Food Basics and run into people you knew back in high school. As for the schools, they aren't the greatest, but things have improved greatly over the last few years, and I can say I PROUDLY graduated from Melvindale High School. With Andrew Luzod as the new mayor the city is already starting to change drastically, for the better. Finally we can see our tax dollars are being put to work, not just paying a few salaries. As for the cops in Melvindale. They try to help whenever they can, but most of time there is nothing they can do. I doubt they are sitting around eating donuts or drinking beer, as one previous person has suggested. Just think, if we have to wait an hour for the cops to show up to a non-emergency call here, we should be grateful. In Detroit, it would be nearly impossible for a cop to show up to a non-emergency call-in any reasonable amount of time. So what is my point. Come on all, put on a happy face and smile, because we could be a lot worse off. The future is bright for our small city.

Hi. I just wanted to say that I was born and raised in the wonderful city of Melvindale. I moved away after I graduated from Melvindale in 1974. On November 6, 2004 I will celebrate my 30 year class reunion at B. Boomer's in Allen Park. I love the web site and it's so good to see the city doing so well instead of falling apart as most places do after you leave. I still see familiar faces when I come into town but my parents are deceased. Keep up the good work Melvindale...you'll always be a BIG part of MY heart! Shannon I bought my house in Melvindale after renting for twelve years. The approach to my garage was cracked. Each year the house and property was inspected by the city and each year nothing was said about it. I raised two baby's in this house and there was no concern for a child tripping at those inspections. I buy the house and now it has to be replaced. I went down their list and fixed the things that were dangerous. Rails, black pipe in water supply lines etc. I did not change the approach. I have no certificate of occupancy because I did not call back for the inspection. Not having this certificate does not change anything. I don't think they can do a whole lot to you if you don't. I say use your common sense. Fix what's dangerous. Any government that expects you to live on a lower standard (less food on the table) to raise property value and increase tax revenue is no government. If you know anyone living in southwest Detroit have them ask around. There are a lot of Mexican Americans that are doing beautiful concrete work in their neighborhood.

It does this old heart good to see people sticking up for their city (Melvindale). I understand that most people see "Melvindale Moments" and think (Senior Moments). At that risk - I recall some things about our schools. When I first came here -Melvindale High School was in Allen Park (go figure). I went to kindergarten at "the annex." That was a small part of what is now MHS. I don't recall an awful lot about that year (with Mrs. Rose) but I do remember a tunnel between the "annex" and Dasher. We sometimes went there for "air raids." I wonder if the tunnel still connects the HS to the Admin. Building. I went to Mt. Hope Lutheran School (a one room schoolhouse on the corner of Outer Drive & Allen) for 2 years (it's gone now - the front steps may still be there off Allen Road.) Back at Dasher - I have fond recollections of a PE teacher named Mr. Carlini. I have encountered many Gym teachers over the years - Mr. Carlini actually taught lessons. We learned to dance - to box - as well as many of the standard activities. Quandt School - Dasher - the annex - all items of memory for many individuals who think of Melvindale as their "home town."

I have coached track for over 40 years now - and have also added on Cross Country over the past 15. As you might imagine, I have encountered many coaches from a variety of schools. Many of them still recall (and identify MHS with) the only "night Cross Country meet" that any one can recall. It happened in 1960 during halftime of a football game. I don't recall our opponent; however, a coach from Trenton brought it up recently. We circled the track and then ran out of the stadium, back through the woods along the creek to Oakwood --> back to the stadium, circled the track once and finished in front of the 50 yard line (on the track). Mr. Elwood Kuerth was the coach who created the meet. We were able to run through the woods because he put up emergency flares all along the path. It was great - and another point of reference for Melvindale that we can point to with pride. In a sad note -- Mr. Kuerth passed away this last year after going on to Eastern Michigan University where he was the head of the Geography Department before retiring.

My husband and I have lived in Melvindale for thirty plus years. The first twenty were the greatest years of our lives. However, the city has seriously started to decline over the last ten years. Just last week I saw the neighborhood drunk defalcating in the alley adjacent to my home. I filed a report with the pd but since they didn't witness the act they didn't want to arrest him. Couldn't they do some type of DNA test on the feces to prove it was his? I am considering selling my home and escaping this industrial cesspool once and for all. Dottie

I saw a earlier posting some time back about all the new police vehicles at the police department. I went to a safety commission meeting at city hall and found out some interesting things from one of the commissioners after the meeting. The police motorcycle are free from Harley Davidson, well almost free they have to pay a dollar a year for them as promo bikes. They have 7 police cars of which 2 are new, the others are 4-5yrs old and always break down but they cannot afford to buy new ones anytime soon. The detective cars are either old lease vehicles or forfeited cars from drug dealers. The ordinance car is a old police car from 1994 and the ord truck is three years old. You may want to check out the crime stats for the city, I did. It is still one of the safest Downriver even with us next to SW Detroit the most crime ridden Prct in Detroit. I do not like or dislike the Melvindale police, they are there when you call them and I know it's alot slower everywhere else. One last thing, I also found out the pay for the police is the lowest in the Downriver area. I was so interested in getting the facts I went and asked for myself, some of you should go to the safety comm meetings, very interesting and you can learn the facts for yourself.

Hi folks, I am currently living in Birch Run, about 2 and a half hours away from you guys - up north, and have kind of inherited a house out there in Melvindale. I just wanted opinions on the city I might be living in, and anything I should know! I dont have any kids, so I'm not worried about the high school just yet. Actually, the jobs are VERY hard to come by out here in the sticks, and not paid very well, once found. I feel kinda forced to move out that way, although I will miss the quiet peaceful country, and the sounds of the race tracks on Friday nights. I am such a country girl, and the city, with its crammed buildings, and terrible traffic (that's the worst for us country people!!) and not so clean air just really makes me doubt everything. If there is an reassurance that it's not that bad, please help!!! Thanks......

I was very disappointed with Mayor Luzod and the City Council for adding a 1% fee to our tax bills. I understand the city is in a financial crunch, but this is not the answer. The residents of Melvindale are living through tough times now and they need every penny they can get. I ran for City Council last year with a plan to cut the city budget by decreasing the salary of the Mayor and Council. The right thing for our leaders to do would be to cut their pay and do what is best for the city. Being a leader you sometimes must make tough choices, and I understand that, but raising taxes should be the last resort. I don't believe there was an honest effort to cut the budget before taking the easy road and raising our tax burden. I commend Councilman John Rowe for opposing this tax increase.

It seems that the city has finally went and started harassing people with a little too much "Cowboy Justice" along with threats and jokes leading up to several Veterans of Foreign war buddies deciding to film the police force and city. Several retired veterans have put together a fund to stop the crooks who run our city by buying cameras and taping every possible event in the police forces' day and all of its city officials. Many officers have been already caught having relations with prostitutes and not following protocol in arrests and procedures through intimidation and other tactics. Now is the time to finally clean up the crooks in the city and there will be measures for each citizen to make a difference and get the corrupt people out of our city or vote on seeing it to be one that has its checks and balances. Look for new lawsuits involving and uncovering "in house crime" in the city of Melvindale!

Buyer beware if you have life insurance and you got it from a company named American General Life you best check your policy! I purchased a policy from American General, I was told it would put my children through collage with its cash value. If you were told this you better open the envelopes they send you because the money you are paying them may not be enough to cover the automatically increased premiums as they increased all the time. They instead of telling you that your policy is being eaten up by these increased premiums, comes a time when they tell you, you don’t have any cash value left and in order to keep the policy you must pay more for less and there is no more cash value. This is their con game and they get away with it. If you let them, consider what they offer you, you may be better off putting your money in Bonds, Credit Unions, CDs or some other form of shavings and then you could leave it in a Trust. In my opinion I have been paying these Chiselers since 1986 and I would have been better off by putting this money in a Bank, Credit Union, Bonds or some other form of savings or investment. Places were I could gain an easy access to my money and not leave it for these Chiselers. My mistake was trusting these people and not opening the envelopes, thinking, if I opened the envelops I might use the cash value for something I did not need. Well I decided to take my wife and me on a small vacation and use some of my cash value, only to find out that there was none and that the policy was about to laps. With the way this company does business, how can anyone trust that they will even pay your beneficiaries when you die.

Melvindale is a little city but it definitely has potential! You've all got to realize that in order to become a better city, the residents have got to help out! Let's start some volunteer organizations, renovating some of the main streets. If you work as a community, you'll definitely make a difference in having a better community! Let's start with the site; instead of showing controversial photo's and video's with adult content, we can make it a friendly site along with a section of upcoming events in Melvindale that the community can be more involved in. I understand that the bulletin board is for everyone to post their opinions, as I am, but I believe it needs a better layout along with some more positive attitudes and better watch on the postings to make it more of a family-friendly site along with sections to see volunteer meetings along with self-help groups that will be held. The governor needs to be more involved with the site and maybe more city appearances. Teachers and volunteers can start after school tutor programs and programs that can help the kids stay off the streets and educate them on the future, along with creating college goals and plans with them.

I would first like to thank our city council for coming through with saving our fireworks at Mel Days!!! Way to go!! Since it was UNANIMOUS I see that they understand the importance of the fireworks as far as this city goes. And now the pool! Why is it if it smells of fun the Mayor wants it gone? The kids in this town have NOTHING TO DO so our Mayor deems it necessary to close the one thing that we can all look forward to in the summer? Why? How much did that big UNECESSARY school cost us? This Mayor is trying to suck ALL and ANY fun we DO HAVE LEFT out of this city and I THANK GOD we have a city council that speaks for the residents. GO CARDS!!!

Here are a few observations about our president George W. Bush: 1. President Bush has nothing to apologize about. When we elected him, we knew that he was incompetent. When he fails to react - or reacts in a bazaar way that leads to the collapse of our economy more than 9-11 - we should not be amazed. 2. President Bush is taking care of the people of the U.S. that elected him - except those poor souls that voted for him because of the abortion issue. With 2 opportunities to name justices to change this situation - and a majority Republican congress to make it happen - check to see if abortions are still there when our president leaves office. If lip service is all it takes to get voters to elect a man who is clearly ready to sell everyone, except his cronies, up the river - we have the man we deserve. Perhaps we can do it all again when Jed runs.

A lot of dissing on South West Detroit. Funny things is, the worst part of SW Detroit is the border along Melvindale. Huge sections of it like Hubbard Farms, Grand Blvd from Vernor to I-75, Bagley etc. are a heck of a lot nicer, more neighborly and safer than Melvindale. Maybe it's Melvindale that is dragging down that border of Detroit! Certainly the property value in these neighborhoods I mentioned exceed Melvindale's. But then, my Melvindale neighbors don't spend too much time checking out the rest of the region, do they?

I lived in Melvindale from 1953 through 1963. Would have been in the Class of '64, but moved. I can't believe all these complaints about Melvindale, but need info on a few people if anyone has it. Does anyone know if Mrs. Ann Renaud who was an English teacher in MHS in early 60s is still around? How about Mrs. Carol Rogers, the music teacher, and wife of Allen Rogers? The "boomers" turn 60 this year, and I'm sure that the teachers are long gone, but many were great, as was the school system. Also trying to connect with Karen DeWitt or any other members of MYF at First Methodist Church. Back then when you got up to the corner of Prospect, which was a dirt road with oil sprayed on it all summer long, Dasher was in front of you and the church was to the left of the football field. Last minister I knew there was Ross Nicholson. Wondered about Jean Ficken. All of you people who complain about the school system and sundry other issues, these are some of the people who molded my life. Ron and Len Schall had a barber shop on Allen Road. Still around? Thanks for reading and taking the time to answer. Most of you guys will have to check with your parents.

How about Miss Meyers, the art teacher? She was forever talking about the Annex. I was in 3rd grade with Miss Allen at the time. Your choices were Miss Allen or Mrs. Julian (at that time; later to become Mrs. Nielsen and then Mrs. Yacht.) Miss Allen was a great educator. She put up with no nonsense and you learned from her. It was good to see that someone else remembers Dasher...even though this was written two years ago...just found the site. Sorry.

I grew up in Melvindale from 1971 to 1982 and I remember my mom worked at a little Italian restaurant where she was close to the owners (whose last name I want to say was "Nudi" and I spent an incredible amount of time there with her and my father who was also a friend of the family. My question is, does anyone know which place I am thinking of and if it is still there? It was iconic in my upbringing and at 34, walking down memory lane is something I do more often. We moved to WI when my father was offered a job at Miller Brewing. I attended St. Conrad's Catholic Church also. We lived in the house at the end of Harman by the elementary school I attended (I believe last time, many years ago when I was there it was closed down and boarded up...Evans School?). I have so many great memories of growing up there and I would love to correspond with anyone who lived there during that time (71 to 81). I remember that my grandparents lived on Henry, and my aunts and uncles lived on Wood and Hanna. Anyway, thanks for reading and please feel free to e-mail me at alangan@mfhupy.com. PS - the thing I miss the most were these "pizza" subs from some place I want to say was called "Howie's".

I am making a complaint towards target department store at 15901 Ford rd. Dearborn, Mi 48126. If this is the wrong place to complaint, please let me know. My complaint is that everytime the store have sales and the products give something free to the customers for buying the items, Target never seems to have whatever they giving away in stock. They tell you to come back later before the sales ends, but they never have it in stock until after the sale. so now you is out of whatever the item is. thats not fair to the customers, because target keeps the item and sales it to the customer later after the sales. who can I talk to this about. This is not the first time they didn't have the free item that the company has offen. I can understand if its once in a while. but not everytime. They don't even give you something else in case they don't have it in stock. I don't understand, because the sale just started sunday, so its not like they ruin out, they just don't put it out, until after the sales is over. Can you help me.

In March 2006 a huge child pornography ring in our city was busted up (thank God). Having the knowledge that this sort of activity was taking place, and as far as anyone else is still taking place, magnifies the need for our city to rethink the types of businesses and business practices we allow within our borders (book/magazine shops, video, party store magazine displays, ect...). More than ever today we need to be thinking people and proactively take the needed steps to protect our children from both the promotion of these types of activities and those who use them to harm others. Time to take a stand!
